"The COVID-19 booster and flu jab programmes are mission critical to keeping our population safe. As we head into winter, it remains absolutely vital that we continue to minimise the spread of the virus."

Responding to the COVID-19 update by Health and Social Care Secretary Sajid Javid, Cllr James Jamieson, Chairman of the Local Government Association, said:

“Vaccination is ultimately our route out of this pandemic but we must stay the course if we are to truly emerge from this without the need for more restrictions.

“We have not experienced the same levels of deaths and hospitalisations that we saw previously but we must not become complacent. Transmission rates in some parts of the country are worryingly high and it is essential that we continue to take all necessary measures to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

“The COVID-19 booster and flu jab programmes are mission critical to keeping our population safe. As we head into winter, it remains absolutely vital that we continue to minimise the spread of the virus including regular testing, getting your COVID-19 vaccine whether it be your first, second or booster dose – particularly those aged 12-15 and the vulnerable - and take any other steps to reduce transmission, such as wearing face masks in crowded spaces.”
